Cordoba- The Mezquita

The Mezquita is definitely up there on the list of the coolest sites I saw while in Spain. The Mezquita was a former mosque as well as the center of Islam. It dates back to the 16th century.

There are about 850 arches in total


King Charles V ordered a church to be built here. Many people opposed (because it was traditionally a mosque) but it was built anyway. The ceiling of the Cathedral part is about 130 feet tall while the mosque’s is only 30 feet. It was interesting to see the opposing religions so close to one another. 
 
 If you look closely you can see that these are some of the older arches because the color is very faded compared to the arches below.

In the past, a cleric would climb up the tower 5 times a day to call Muslims to prayer.
